The Holy Life of St. Euphrasia and the Message That Gives to   the Society of Today.

“You shall be holy to me; for I the Lord am holy and I have separated you from the other peoples to be mine.” Rev.20:26.
Introduction
A saint is God’s masterpiece. Saints bring greater glory of God. The saints. Of flesh and blood as we are did suffered, fully responded to the grace of their Christian calling. They are for the world lightening conductors, mediators and models.
A call to Holiness: “Holiness is within the reach of everyone”. (St. Francis Sales). Holiness is the English derivative of the Hebrew word ‘qds’ and the greek word ‘Lagos’, both meaning “to set apart”. “All Christians in any state or walk of life are called to the fullness of life and to the perfection of love, and by this holiness a more human manner of life is fostered also in early society”.-LG.40. Every country, every epoch, every walk of life, every age group has had its saint. It is the time, to have the first saint Euphrasia of the Sacred Heart.
Holiness was the first maxim that lead saint Euphrasia , she willed for that and today she become the first saint of the Congregation of the Mount Carmel.
1.   The Sprout of the seed of Vocation
“The seeds fell on the good soil and brought forth grain some a hundred fold, some sixty, some thirty” Mt.13:8.  For St. Euphrasia, the good soil was Eluvuthinkal house along with her parents Cherpukaran Antony& Kunjethi and grandmother. Her mother Kunjethi   taught her well i.e., watered her with love of god, devotion and virtues. Rose (baptism name of Euphrasia) offered her virginity at the age of nine was clear evidence that her parents had nurtured in her all that need to live a holy Christian life. She was a very pious and order, modest etc (from the letter of Rev. Mother Anjes). Rosa longed earnestly to become a nun and to give her life only to Jesus. On 10th January 1898 she received the religious habit from Bishop John  Menachery. She lived her Christian call or the Religious call to holiness in the most exemplary manner but in a hidden way.
2.   Everyday Mysticism
Saint Euphrasia found god in the midst of ordinary human experience. She designed to become an ‘unknown saint’. She says in letter17, “god has called me… not merely to lead a good life but to a most virtues life so as to become a saint…” She was responding her call to holiness from her young age. She went on war herself to acquire the virtues she loved most; obedience, humility, poverty and holiness. She tried not to waste any occasion to practice a virtue. She was specially favored with many mystical experiences. She had a close union with Jesus her “Heavenly spouse” who gifted her wedding ring. Among the 74 found letters she had written nine of them to mention about her mystical union with Jesus her Heavenly spouse. Therefore St. Euphrasia was a saint who could find god everyday and everywhere also in everyone.
3.   Sanctuary Lamp
In the Churches a lamp is lit before the sanctuary to significe the presents of god. Saint Euphrasia was such a lamp who spent her time before the Lord, who burnt for the love of god to desnel the pains from the suffering brethren. Numerous sisters and people have said their testimony in the book ‘Daivadasi Euphrasiamma’ by sanjose. They have seen always this saintly mother who sat in corns of the convent chapel with a moving Rosary in hand. She responded to the invitation of the Lord “to be with him”(Mk.3:14)and “come to me…”(Mt.11:28). Thus she chose the‘better part’ like Mary in the Gospel .She heard the cry of the Lord “I thirst”. She shared the passion of the Lord – (letter64). Letters 9, 10, 16,26,27,55, are saying about how Euphrasia was longing to share the passion of the Lord. Although this holy Mother sat in a corner of the Chapel, her prayers reached out to all corners of our Lord.
4.   True Daughter of the Church.
“Be children of the church! Be children of the church”- St. Elizabeth Anne Saton!
As our Mother church is holy, she invites all her children into holiness. Mother Euphrasia indeed heard this call and responded faithfully; she truly kept the words of St.Teresa of Avila, as her guide lines, ‘I am proud to be a Daughter of the Church”. She gave great respect to the Bishops, priest and prayed for them.   The problems, schismo, threats that the church faced was a pain for her. She did great mortifications, sacrifices and penance to save and protect the church from all dangers and evils. “I am praying specially for the schismaties”/ letter40. Also we have letters 22,40,41,42 concerns about the church. Beside this she had great zeal for the salvation of souls.
4.1 Zeal for Souls
St. Euphrasia was a saint who was a friend of the three churches. Church militant, church suffering and church Triumphant. Euphrasia had never gone out to preach the gospel, but the fragrance of her sanctity was known to all people around. And they came to her for asking prayers… Mother Euphrasia welcomed all who came to her with a smile. She assured the hope, suggested them to pray some small ejaculations, or Rosary and she too did pray and did penance for their sake. Thus she gave consolation to all sorts of people.
Mother Euphrasia was a consolation for the souls in purgatory. “It is our duty as Christians to pray for the souls in purgatory” (ccc1030). Many souls came to her asking her prayers for them. She prayed did sacrifice and penance for them, and they ever came in glory to thank her for the prayers. A number of letters speak about the souls in purgatory.
5 .A Genuine  Daughter of CMC
“Be holy and lead others to holiness”- Yes the holy mother Euphrasia lived the Charism in a most faithful way. There is a saying “If you key, the rules the rules will keep you”. So also it fulfilled in this humble daughter of St. Chavara and Fr. Leopold. Because she was leading a model life in community, Euphrasia was given in charge of the novices for nine years. Her simplicity, humility charity and obedience were so impressive to others and they give testimony that ‘how her life was a motivation and inspiration indeed’. She fulfilled a desire of her founder St.Chavara, “the church in Kerala has become barren because she doesn’t have any saints”. Truly she was an answer for his pain.
6. Prayer Life
For St.Euphrasia prayer was her life and her life was a prayer indeed. “Let the Holy Family reign in your hearts…” these last wish of the Holy founder was a reality in the life of Euphrasia. She was longing for the presence of god. She did everyone of her action to please god and for the love of him. She did everything for Jesus, with Jesus her “Heavenly Spouse”. All who have met her have seen and witnessed: A sister who spent all her time in the chapel by praying the Rosary and looking at Jesus in the Tabernacle and on the Cross.
6.1 Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
The name ‘Sr. Euphrasia of the Sacred Heart itself was an expression of her deep love to the Holy heart of Jesus. Euphrasia began and ended her day by praying before the statue of the Sacred Heart which she herself placed in the parlor when she was the superior of the house. She often repeated this little prayer ‘To love you where from will I get a big heart?”. “ My Holy Redeemer, whenever you are rejected in human hearts, come and dwell in my heart”. Truly she was burnt with the love of Jesus.
6.2 Devotion to Mary
“Come to the foot of the alter, there graces will pour upon all who ask for it”. There were told by Mother Mary when she appeared to St.Catherine Laboure on 18th July 1830. And Mary revealed there at first time that she is the Immaculate – “O Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse to you”. We see in mother Euphrasia that she truly heard the voice of Mary she and she had special devotion to the Immaculate Mary (letter29, pg.124). She had a special affection to Mary. She called her as “My Mother:. Mother Mary was coming to her from the age of nine onwards. Many times Mary has come closer to her many times in person. Mother Mary even came a companion to pray the Rosary along with St.Euphrasia. She has mentioned about 25 times in her letters. At one sitting praying the 153 beeds was usual with this Blessed Nun.
7. Fiat-Obedience to the will of God.
Saint Euphrasia’s practice of humility, obedience and surrendering to the will of god was great. She said “there is great joy and contententment in my heart to do things under obedience”.  Mother Euphrasia used to pray often “O my god! Fulfill in me your holy will perfectly till death”. She could find the will of god, from the long time that she spent time in prayer before the Lord. Every day and at every moment Euphrasia found the will of God and found great joy in doing this holy will. The best example is the Jubilee memento words from Holy Euphrasia “Eternal Father, I offer you myself a holocaust to love in order that your holy will and desire be perfectly fulfilled in all things”. When she was faced with adversaries in her family she was not distressed but trusted in Lord and reminded her brother “Even though we face of decrease in money but never should decrease in virtue”. With a thirst to do god’s will of god and to practice the virtue of humility. Mother Euphrasia was even ready to kiss the feet of her novice. These examples prove that Mother Euphrasia possessed the virtue of humility the mother of all virtues.
8. Attitude of Gratitude.
“Attitude of gratitude is the best attitude”. One of the best attitudes of saint Euphrasia was that of gratitude. She never forgot to say a word of thanks to all who did even little favor, she had a beautiful expression, “Won’t forget even after death”- with a heart touching smile. Children were flocking to her to do some small favors in order to receive or to see her smiling face.
9. Charity without Frontiers.
‘There shouldn’t be even a single day that lacks charitable deeds’.   Yes the words of the holy founder Kuriakose Elias Chavara had come true also in the life of this holy man. Euphrasia touched the heart of all with a content word by her acts she became “a Mother” for all. At her canonization Pope Benedict told about this holy mother, that ‘she dedicated her life before the Lord in prayer and shared it to others by a beautiful smile’… she was always close to those who were sick in community and served them with much love. She was feeling so much to the people who await her’ your charity will bring salvation to souls”.
M y Life is My Message.
“Difficulties are sorrows, if accepted out of love are transformed into a privileged way of holiness’.  Pope Paul II. St. Euphrasia was a saint who could smile even in the midst of accuts pain a suffering.  Her joy was ‘leading a hidden life unknown to others;’ Euphrasia did not become a saint on a sudden day but by the constant efforts; of prayer & penance and doing sacrifices over seventy four long years.  In this holy mother, we have a person who was born in our society just like anyone of us, and lived a humble simple but a holy life. She was woman fully alive. She was an open Bible before all she was a ‘theophany’- brought god near us. Looking from above her smiles and say.
¨ Remember our call is a call to holiness.
¨ Love Jesus more than anything &more than anyone.
¨ Love Mary as the only Mother and pray the Rosary as much as possible.
¨ Have great love to the Eucharistic Jesus and His Sacred Heart.
¨ Say always thanks for any favor at least a smile.
                                       Conclusion
“To every Indian that sanctity ‘the one thing necessary’ is possible also in our own times”. The holy life of Mother Euphrasia gives the message to our world today that “Holiness is within the reach of everyone’. Euphrasia brought about in their life what others only talked about. She “willed’ and she became.
We do not have to look for models outside as though sanctity is outside our reach. St. Euphrasia was an ‘angel’ among us as a CMC sister. Now she has become a ‘star’ to show us the way to inspire us and to imitate… There is an old Peruvian proverb…
                        ‘Pilgrim, Pilgrim, Pilgrim.
There is no way, no way, no way.
You make the way, you make the way, you make the way
                        By walking, walking, walking.”

BL. EUPHRASIA: A WOMAN OF GOD
Introduction
For the Church in India, it is a season of grace, a season of divine favour.  The announcement of the date for the canonization of Bl. Kuriakose Elias Chavara, the founder father of both CMI and CMC Congregations, the first two indigenous Congregations for men and women respectively in the Syro Malabar Church and Bl. Euphrasia, a holy nun hails from CMC who followed rightly the Charism given to the Congregation, brings delight for the Church in India, especially the Syro Malabar Church the second largest Church of the Oriental Rite. Yes, the Church in India prepares herself to receive her 2nd and 3rd canonized saints who belong to the great Carmelite order which is renowned in the universal Church in giving birth to saints both well-known and simple. The thirst for God, the longing to see God is part of Carmelite tradition. Bl. Euphrasia cherished and possessed this heritage of Carmel. Her call to Carmel was to line up along with the heavenly indwellers to intercede constantly for the people of God on earth.  “God has called me not to live a good life, but to live a most virtuous life like that of a saint” (cf. Letters of Bl. Euphrasia, page 373). This was one of the life convictions of Bl. Euphrasia. Now when the Holy Father Pope Francis announces the date of her canonization, she directly proves that she lived up to her life conviction. Even though Euphrasia desired to become an unknown saint like St. Therese of Lissieux, she became a known one, a canonized saint, a bliss showered on few holy people. Being the first CMC saint she challenges CMC sisters to be faithful in living the charism which in nutshell is to become saints and to help others to lead saintly life.
A Brief Sketch of Life
The blessed birth day of Mother Euphrasia is on 17th October 1877. Kattur – a small village of Trichur district of Kerala – was fortunate to receive at its lap this holy child named Rosa. The parents of Rosa, Elavathungal Antony and Chalissery Kunjethy were practising Christians. Apart from Rosa they were blessed with three sons and a daughter named Kochuthresia. The providence of God did not allow Kochuthresia to be on earth a long time. Her untimely death shocked the entire family.
The material riches and fortunes of the family could not give satisfaction to the little heart of Rosa. From childhood onwards she longed for God, as a patch weary land thirsts for the water. Nothing could turn her away from this God orientedness. Her longing for God was so strong that at the age of nine she could freely offer her virginity to God Almighty. As history witnesses all the ‘stubborn’ efforts of her father to change her heart was in vain and at the end Elavathungal Antony bent his head and knees in front of the divine providence. With a weeping heart he gave permission to Rosa to embrace religious life. Thus at the age of 11 Rosa was brought to the boarding at Koonammavu which was started in 1868 then called Educumdath.
St. Teresa’s convent at Koonammavu is the first indigenous convent (Congregation) founded by        Bl. Kuriakose Elias Chavara with the help of an Italian Carmelite Missionary Rev. Fr. Leopold Beccaro OCD on 13th February 1866 with the intention of being an ‘Abode of Virtues’ for the girls of Malabar. The first members of this Congregation were servant of God Vakayil Eliswa, her daughter Vakayil Anna, Eliswa’s sister Vyppissery Thresia and Puthanagady Clara. Except the last, the other three members hailed from the Latin Rite. The founding of a Congregation beyond the boundaries of Rites recall the wide hearts of the founding fathers who aimed the good of the Church, the people of God. 24 years the convent at Koonammavu accepted all girls who wished to lead virtuous life and desired to learn languages and handicrafts. In 1887 two Vicariates were formed (Thissur and Kottayam) for the Syrian Catholics and thus they were separated from the Latin Vicariate of Verapoly. As a result the convent at Koonammavu came under the Vicariate of Trichur and the sisters belonged to the Latin Rite were taken away to Verapoly in 1890. A second division of the Syrian Vicariates took place in 1896 establishing three Vicariates namely Changanassery, Ernakulam and Trichur and Koonammavu convent came under the jurisdiction of Ernakulam Vicariate. Bishop John Menachery the first native bishop of Trichur had taken all the inmates of Koonammavu convent who belonged to that Vicariate to Ambazhakadu. Thus including Rosa 9 Aspirants, 3 novices and a few boarding girls along with Sr. Beatrice went to the Vicariate of Trichur on 9 May 1897. The very next day, receiving the headdress these 9 aspirants entered in the next stage of religious formation called postulancy. On that day Rosa received her new religious name ‘Euphrasia of the Sacred Heart of Jesus’. On 10 January 1898 she had her vestition and first profession. After three years of life at Ambazhakkad along with others Sr. Euphrasia was transferred to the newly built convent at Ollur and took her perpetual profession on 24 May 1900. She spent her consecrated life doing humble services lovingly. The services which she rendered in the convent include Assistant superior, Novice mistress (1904 – 1910) and Superior (1913 – 1916). Rest of her life Euphrasia was leading as she wished always a hidden holy life, known only to heavenly indwellers and from there she was uprooted to be planted in heaven which was her sole aim in life. On 29 August 1952 the choirs angels sang happy birthday to her in heaven. Last 62 years unceasingly she showered and still showers flowers of graces to this valley of tears.
The Prophetic Order of Bp. John Menachery
It was only the providence of God that brought to light the hidden spirit filled, mystical life and humble services of Bl. Euphrasia. For this God chose the instrumentality of Bp. John Menachery. Thus it happened:  Little Rosa’s life at Koonammavu was shaken by serious illnesses. When one after another she was attacked by these deceases, even the sisters had thought of sending her back to home. Hearing her prayers in tears, the Holy Family blessed her with a miraculous vision. Sr. Anjes of Jesus, the superior of St. Teresa’s convent at Koonammavu wrote all the details of this vision and sent it to bishop John Menacherry. Thus she concluded the letter: “After this vision these I wrote down from this child’s heart. Before this event happened, it had been decided to send away this child without allowing her to join the convent. Because of this event and the child’s modesty, piety and order, etc., only later decided to receive” (cf. Mother Euphrasia Letters, page 373). Bishop John Menachery considered this letter seriously by the grace of God and ordered Rosa to write to the bishop directly the state of her spiritual life. As history proves it was indeed a prophetic order. As a result today the Church is blessed to have 80 letters of Bl. Euphrasia which disclose well her deep and high spirituality and mystical experiences. Her letters are so simple but mystical. They recall how she enjoyed the daily routine life inside the convents. Her continuous request to destroy them soon after reading was unheard by the bishop by the special grace of God. Thanks be to God, therefore we could pierce into her inner world where she enjoyed the heavenly bliss along with heavenly beings.  From these letters one can easily trace out that her crystal clear soul always was in union with God; her constant fight against evil powers found its result then and there and such fight enabled her to fly up above in saintly life.
A Contemplative cum Mystic
Mother Euphrasia was indeed a contemplative and a mystic. The inner disposition of her soul, the profundity of her spiritual life can be read out clearly from her letters. Her closeness to Jesus and Mary, her devotion and love towards the  Blessed Sacrament, her constant fight against the evil powers, her ‘blind’ commitment to fulfill the divine will through whatever channels it might come  and above all her virtuous life were stepping stones for her heavenly visions and mystical experiences. As a Carmelite her dedication to be always in the living presence of God, to ponder over the Word of God and to contemplate the eternal love of God and thus to reach up to the seventh mansion where the mystical union takes place were found its fruits very soon. Along with the great mystics of Carmel St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of Cross, Euphrasia can also be counted. Those who go through her spiritual letters once or twice will not be able to grasp the depth of her God experience. She was really a woman of God who was conversing constantly with Jesus, Mary, Joseph and Choirs of Angels. The richness of these heavenly experiences did not take her away from doing selfless services to all those who are in need.
Custodian of the Tabernacle
It is just and right indeed to call Euphrasia as the keeper of the Tabernacle. Her presence in the Chapel was so regular and constant.  Whenever she gets time she would be in and around the Chapel. Therefore it was easy for the sisters to trace her out when an emergency comes. Like Mary the sister of Martha in the Gospel of Luke, Euphrasia tried to choose the better part which cannot be taken away from her (Lk. 10: ). Some of the letters underline the loving whisperings that she heard from the Eucharistic Lord. Since most of the time she spent in front of the tabernacle, she was called as ‘the keeper of the Tabernacle’ and ‘the praying mother’.
A Lover of the Sacred Heart
The devotion of Bl. Euphrasia to the Sacred Heart of Jesus was unfathomable. Receiving the new religious name as ‘Euphrasia of Sacred Heart of Jesus’ itself enabled her to love the Sacred Heart ardently. As her future life showed, her existence itself was unthinkable without the constant loving dedication to the Sacred Heart.  Her life was totally guided by the Sacred Heart whose presence gave her joy and peace of mind. Revelations of Sacred heart is one of the main themes in her Letters. When she became the superior of St. Mary’s convent at Ollur, the first thing she did was to keep the statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at the centre of the community room saying Sacred Heart of Jesus is having the sole authority. This reminds us the action of St. Teresa of Avila in 16th century when she became the superior of the incarnation convent at Avila in Spain. On the chair of the superior, St. Teresa kept the statue of Mother of Carmel and said to her sisters that it is not she but the mother of God is their superior. If mother of God is the superior the sisters can expect only good things from her. Following the example of this holy grandma of Carmel, Bl. Euphrasia’s sought the special grace of the Sacred Heart to fulfill the entrusted duty of the superior.
A Woman for the People of God
Being a woman of God never forced her to turn away from the people of God. How closely she related to God, with the same intensity she could dedicate herself for the people especially for the poor and downtrodden. Among those who approached her for help, no one had gone with heavy heart. She could console them with the grace of God. Poor people and children enjoyed special graces through her prayer and help. The girls and women who worked in the convent compound were always at very dear to Bl. Euphrasia and she paid keen attention in fulfilling their needs. She never allowed them to shed tears. Thus she lived really the spirit and enthusiasm of her founder father Bl. Kuriakose Chavara who always kept a soft corner towards the poor and needy.
Conclusion
Bl. Euphrasia, a woman of God stands as a ‘threat’ to the contemporary consumerist global community. Her sheer simplicity, prayerful life, visions, mystical experiences and unselfish dedication are challenges to the current world where for majority God oriented life is incomprehensible. So too her attitude towards the poor and downtrodden is unimaginable to the present world which under the title of ‘global village’ defrauds the poor and makes the rich, richer.  In other words, Bl. Euphrasia  indeed is a question mark for today’s world where materialism, power and money take the lead. Without changing its outlook, contemporary web world will feel uneasiness in front of this great but simple saint.

Marian Spirituality of Mother Euphrasia
Dr Sr Chrislin CMC
In closely following the spiritual journey of Mother Euphrasia with a view to delving deeply into the Marian dimension of her spirituality, based on her writings- Letters and Prayers- and on her biographies, one comes across the constant and profound action of nature and grace. The foundations of her spiritual edifice are laid on the deep rooted devotions to Jesus and Mary. Accompanied by a generous ascetical life which again was supported by profound Carmelite and Indian traditions, these generated in Euphrasia a lively zeal for union with God.  Enunciating the sense of human existence, the Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “God calls man to seek him, to know him, to love him with all his strength” (CCC no.1).  In the case of Mother Euphrasia, this wholehearted seeking, knowing and loving of God is facilitated through no other means than through Mary. So thorough was the role she assigns to the Virgin Mother of God in her total existence that, in turn, through Mary’s help, Euphrasia was enabled “enabled to offer [her life] everyday for Christ and to cooperate with Him in the salvation of the world” (Cf. VC, no. 28).
Mother’s presence –active, tender and maternal- is seen constantly in the ascetical and deeply spiritual journey of Mother Euphrasia, culminating in the union with God, and thus living to the full “the mysterious principle of ‘consecration through renunciation’ and ‘fulfillment through consecration.’
Marian Devotions of Mother Euphrasia: A Symbol of her Commitment to the Virgin Mother
It is very evident that Euphrasia was influenced by the contemporaneous emphasis given to the devotional practices in her spiritual life. But her devotion to the Mother Mary proceeding from her ardent faith and the loving recognition of Mary’s dignity, fostered filial affection towards her and inspired Euphrasia to take firm resolution to imitate the Virgin Mother’s virtues and fulfill her will in all (Letters, no. 25&37). She adhered to this dedication so that through her devotion to the Mother, she was able to find Jesus- her Heavenly Savior and Divine Spouse- perfectly, to love Him tenderly and to serve Him faithfully. In this way, her relationship with and imitation of Christ facilitated by her close connection with the Blessed Mother, proved to be a touch-stone of her genuine devotion to the BL. Virgin.
For a superficial reader, Mother Euphrasia – in using the titles attributed to Mary in her devotions, like ‘the Mother of God’ ‘Immaculate Mother,’ and ‘Queen’ etc., - may seem to be favouring the ‘privilege-centered Mariology’ that characterized the post- Tridentine Church. But Mother Euphrasia’s life provides a complementary picture of the Mother of God as the Mother of mercies and graces, the Mother of ‘God-with-us’ moving with community of believers, as an advocate for human beings still on their earthly journey, and hope for their final union with her son. As A. Serra points out in connection with the Biblical descriptions concerning the queenship of Mary: “In the plan of God, which includes in an eminent manner, Christ and the Virgin Mother, there is a paradox: to reign means to serve, and to serve signifies to reign”(New Dictionary on Mary, p.1195).   In other words, for Euphrasia, the privileges of Mary do not exclude the fact that this Mother is the ‘handmaid of the Lord’ and of the humanity as a whole.
Mother Euphrasia continued the apostolate of prayer through various Marian devotional exercises, which point to the universal character of her apostolic life dedicated to God, because of the plurality of prayer intentions. This is very relevant in the simple form of prayer like the rosary, and ejaculatory prayers, practices of which were very dear to Euphrasia. As is stated by a Dominican nun, J. Hastings, “in a very real sense, those who pray the rosary hold the world and all it contains within the loving and life-giving presence of Christ” (Rosary:Prayer for all Seasons, 1993, p.8) and His Bl. Mother, who in turn, is constantly interceding before Jesus, the only Mediator before God (cfr. I Tim. 2, 5b). The Church, its ministers and the public came into contact with her especially through the rosary. Thus she became a ‘benefactor of all’(Paul VI, Discourse, 1964).  It is a proof that her devotion to Mary is not a superficial sentimentalism, neither is it an intellectual abstraction or illuminism, but it is a generous commitment to the Mother of the Saviour her Lord. She does not offer a devotion without influence on practical life.
‘Euphrasian’ Marian Spirituality
While dealing with the Marian spirituality of this Carmelite, actually what is involved here is a move from following Mary by imitating her and moving on to deeper communion with her through identification with her. It is an entering into a profound relationship with Mary so as to walk with her in a pilgrimage of faith, hope, obedience and charity. This is, for Euphrasia, a life of union with Mary, expressing an intense Marian experience as is evident in her letters. It is equivalent to a life habitually guided in dependence on Mary, under her maternal protection. Such a relationship with Mary does not terminate with her, but necessarily tends to an ever deeper communion with Trinity. Thus Euphrasia’s filial loving conversations with Mary, her spontaneity and readiness to fulfill whatever is pleasing to Jesus and Mary, and her experiences of union with them, are reciprocated on the whole journey to profound divine union and mystical marriage. As is seen in the above exposition, her life experiences show that these trends of a very close union with Mary and service of Mary in no way detracts from God. In Euphrasia’s own words, “Mary is the way which guides me to the spiritual mountain, Jesus Christ.”(Marianjaly, p.14)  Euphrasia was, in fact, reiterating the belief of the Church of her time, especially under the Pontificate of Pius X, who, affirmed that “through Mary is opened to us the surest way of knowing Christ”(ASS, 36, 1903).  Again, as the Marian Pontiff John Paul II continues to assert, “Mary in fact constantly points to her Divine Son” (AAS, 87, 1995) and leads all to Him. By all means, union with Mary of a soul is a notable testimony of the corresponding concept of the function of Mary in the spiritual life.

This experience is in conformity with the Carmelite tradition, in general, where the contemplative life and the exalted experiences related to it are very frequently perceived to have Marian characteristics and where Mary is seen accompanying the Carmelite contemplatives on their journey to divine union. According to some theologians, this Marian life has its foundations primarily on the spiritual maternity of Mary (mediation) to which the soul responds in the power of the Spirit of Jesus with the sentiment of filial love: and also on Mary’s singular union with God, which works in such a way that the contemplation of Mary leads the soul necessarily to the contemplation of Him. For the Carmelites, whose main work is prayer and contemplation,(St. Teresa of Avila, Way of Perfection) this has a specific importance.  In harmony with the saying of Paul VI that ‘if one wants to be a Christian one has to be Marian’ (Discourse, 1970),  Euphrasia seems to put forth through her life experience with Mary that ‘to be a Carmelite one has to be Marian.’ Likewise, for the CMC sisters as whole, ‘the Servant of God Mother Euphrasia, who coined a unique spiritual path through a hidden life of prayer and sacrifice’ by faithfully following the ‘Marian voice’ in her way to God, is an exemplary figure.

Saint Euphrasia, a humble CMC nun

Saint Euphrasia is a humble CMC nun who has pe
rsonalized the prayer heritage of Carmel and lived according to the divine inspirations and rose to the heights of sanctity. For all of us who are called to be the beloved of God that is to be saints(Rom: 1:7), the spirit-filled life of St. Euphrasia is an example and to take a peep into her holy life would be proper and useful. Rosa was born as the daughter of Elavuthinkal Antony and Kunjethi on 17 October, 1877 in Kattur which was in the undivided Trichur Diocese and now in the Diocese of Irinjalakuda. Besides three brothers, Rosa had a sister also, but she died in early childhood. Even in the midst of all wealth and pomp in the family, little Rosas heart desired only God. A good evidence of this is her offer of her virginity to God at the tender age of 9. After overcoming many obstacles she was able by the grace of God to become a member of the boarding of the kerala Carmelite Congregation in (founded by BlKuriakoseElias Chavara in 1866) at Koonammavu. In those days the Koonammavu boarding was the only place of virtue where the girls who desire religious life can go. There the boarding started in 1868 was taught orderly life and education and practice of virtue besides other handicrafts also were taught. This was a very good training place for the girls who desired religious life. The Koonammavu convent was under the administration of Trichur Vicariate, started in 1887, but in the re-division of the vicariate (TrichurErnakulamChanganassery) it came under the Ernakulum diocese. The first native Bishop of the Trichur diocese Mar John Menachery brought the sisters who belonged to Trichur diocese from Koonammavu. They were taken to the newly founded stJosephs convent Ambazhakkad, the first Carmelite convent of the undivided Trichur diocese. Here on 10 May, 1897 the head-dress was given to Rosa Elavuthinkal who received the new religious name, Euphrasia of the sacred Heart of Jesus.
One of the important things that happened before coming to Trichur is to be noted here. This child, Rosa was always troubled by many serious sicknesses. From one such a very serious illness, she was saved by a miraculous vision of the Holy Family. The details of this vision and the reasons why she was allowed to continue in the convent were written in a letter by Sr Agnes, the then mother superior and sent through the sisters to Mar JohnMenachery the Bishop. This letter was the cause to have special attention towards this nun and also to cause the Bishop to order her to report her spiritual state truly to him regularly. This virtuous virgin after receiving the Carmelite dress from Mar John Menachery on 10 January, 1898 began to deepen in personal love for Lord Jesus. On 24 May 1900, the St.Marys convent Ollur was founded. That day itself Sr. Euphrasia along with others made her perpetual profession in this new convent and surrounded her whole self to Jesus.
The period from 1904-1910 when Sr. Euphrasia was the Asst. Superior of St. Marysconvent Ollur and in-charge of the novices was a period of innumerable graces. When in the congregation officially novitiate was started it was Sr. Euphrasia who was selected to be the first novice mistress. It was at this time that the order of Mar John Menachery, Mariam Thressia who is today among the blessed came to stay at the Ollur convent in order to discern her vocation. It was mother Euphrasia who was the novice mistress who gave the necessary formation to Mariam Thressia. More than mistress and disciple it was the coming together of two holy saintly souls guided by the Holy Spirit. In the deep experience of God both of them were great friends. Mother Euphrasia who was appointed superior of the St. Marys convent Ollur from 1913-1916 served the sisters under her authority in a very exemplary way. She was able to do loving and kind services to all those who came into contact with her because of the divine love she received from the Holy Eucharist and the Sacred Heart of Jesus and her devotion to Mother Mary.
Mother Euphrasia grew in humility, poverty and holiness as she completely obeyed the will of God every moment. The whole life of this virgin was full of continuous prayer, penance and reparation. Mother Euphrasia who found contentment in loving Jesus, her divine spouse was always in the forefront in receiving censure and abuses. All those who approached her she helped with motherly love, prayer and good advice. This prayer help she extended to souls in purgatory also. After a long life of 75 years, Euphrasia, the praying mother passed away in the convent at Ollur on 29 August, 1952. It was a wonder that the church bell at Cheralayam parish began to ring without stop at her death. To all those who prayed her intercession, the one who never forgets even after death, granted graces. God is revealing her great heavenly intercessory power through miracles and signs. This holy virgin who desired to become an unknown saint is raised today to the glory of the altar by the Almighty and the sweet fragrance of her sanctity is spread worldwide.
